Portfolio Management for New
Products
by Scott J.
Edgett, Elko J. Kleinschmidt,
Robert Gravlin Cooper
This book approaches PPM from the perspective of an
engineering or New Product organization. It stresses
allocating funds by product line and evaluating projects
based on revenue and ROI, both of which are luxuries that
the average IT organization just doesn't have. While
the book certainly doesn't offer all the answers an
organization would need to have in order to implement an
effective PPM process it still offers a good overview on the
topic. |

Project Portfolio Management:
Selecting and Prioritizing Projects for Competitive
Advantage
by Lowell D.
Dye (Editor), James S.
Pennypacker (Editor)
This book is a collection of papers on the topic of project
portfolio management. The book is broken into four
sections, overview, selection and prioritization, tools,
techniques and methods. and best practices and applications. I strongly recommend reading Timothy
Luehrman's article on Strategy as a Portfolio of Real
Options. One of the portfolio factors we often see
clients over look is that of timing. Some projects
need to be done now or there is no sense in doing them, some
projects are essentially time neutral, while other projects
should only be done after a specific future event has
occurred. Luehrman uses the investment concept of real
options to clarify an often overlooked common sense
approach. |
